Considering the recent events in Ukraine, I really don’t know what to say… So I’ll just share a few thoughts that came up for me.
To be honest, I’m finding myself checking the news every 5min and basically doing ALL THE THINGS I usually wouldn’t do and would tell my clients not to do…
My heart goes out to everyone who is losing their homes, hopes, and loved ones right now. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I’m the first to admit that what’s happening over there is breaking my heart and I find it difficult to stay calm and focused.
Yet that’s EXACTLY what we need to do right now. Panicking doesn’t help anyone and if history has taught us one thing it’s that uncontrolled fear is a very bad advisor.
Let’s not fall into the trap of seeing everything through the lens of “good” versus “evil”, “my truth against yours”, “them” versus “us”.
That kind of thinking only amplifies the divide and makes us forget that we are not fighting abstract concepts, cultures, or ideologies, but other HUMAN BEINGS.
Humans who have parents, siblings, friends, spouses, kids, and pets. Humans who laugh and cry, crave safety and fear danger, and will do whatever they can to protect what they love – people just like YOU and me.
Let’s focus on the things that we have in common rather than the things that separate us. Because underneath the surface-level differences, we are all the same. Hurting another human being is hurting humanity as a whole.
Let’s focus on the things that each and every one of us can do today to support peace and make the world a better place. I believe that everyone can do something, big or small, that supports peace and brings people closer together.
For instance, I decided to donate a digital product to raise money for the victims of this war and I’m also joining the local Red Cross to actively support the refugees that we expect to arrive soon.
It doesn’t feel like much, but I know that collectively, we’ll make a difference. It’s vital to stay optimistic and show our support.
This reminds me of something I read in Yuval Harari’s book “Sapiens – A Short History of Humankind” that I’m reading right now: He describes politics as a level 2 chaotic system which means that it’s a kind of chaos that REACTS to predictions about it.
Unlike the weather, as his example of a level one chaotic system, that doesn’t change depending on our weather predictions – history, politics, and economics DO change depending on our predictions.
For instance: If we predict a stock market crash, investors panic, and low and behold, we’ll see the market crash we predicted.
If we predict stable and profitable markets, on the other hand, nobody gets spooked, people don’t lose their trust, and the markets will stay stable.
So how we RESPOND to the crisis now, how we THINK about it and TALK about it, really matters because it can either have a stabilizing or destabilizing effect on the whole situation.
We have to choose very carefully what kind of future we want to build and trust that we’ll be able to bring our vision alive.
Mankind’s ingenuity has connected the world through the invention of the internet, scientists have found cures for several diseases that used to be deadly, and humans have sent space probes to the edge of the solar system – who knows what else we’re capable of if we collectively focus our creativity and resources to work toward a better tomorrow.
I know it sounds cheesy, but I’m going to say it anyway because it’s true: BE the change that you want to see in the world.
Sending you all lots of love & strength! Take care & talk to you soon. Bye.
